Atholl RFC Girls Rugby
BACKGROUND

The girls’ team has evolved from an enthusiastic group at Breadalbane Academy. Some of the girls took part in mini rugby whilst at primary school. This enabled them to train and compete in mixed sex games between local primary schools.

However, they found that once they reached secondary school level that there were no competitive games available and that they could no longer train or play in mixed sessions.

Regardless, they continued to be committed to training throughout their first year at secondary school and thanks to school staff some competitive games against other Scottish girls teams were arranged.

Additional coaching was organised in Dunkeld each Sunday.Despite half of the girls having to travel round trips in excess of 40 miles they continued to regularly attend these additional coaching sessions. It became clear that the girls would benefit from the support that could be provided to them by being part of a club and consequently following discussions with Atholl Rugby Club the girls have been enthusiastically welcomed into the Club.

To date the girls have taken part in competitive games against various other clubs acquitting themselves well. In 2009 they made it to the SWRU under 15 cup semi-finals only to be knocked out by the eventual winners. They have also taken part in matches at Murrayfield, Perth, Crieff and MacDiarmid Park aw well as in variuos 7s competitions aquitting themselves well.

There are presently approx 20 girls aged from 11 to 14 from a range of schools regularly training.
Any girls aged 11 to 18 are welcome to attend.

At present training is held from 2 to 4 each Sunday at the Recreation Park (next to the tennis courts)in Dunkeld.
